Description: Kamikaze Saki Bottle - RARE A fine Japanese Kutani style bottle, 5 in. tall, decorated with writing and illustrations of a fighter plane, anchor, rising sun, and the Japanese flag. The bottle has a uniform glaze and bears no chips or cracks. Very fine condition. I purchased it from a reputable Militaria dealer about 15 years ago. I had a Japanese friend translate what the script says on the bottle: - Year of 1944 - Kutani (yaki) = a famous, branded ware maker's name, producing so many good pieces of pottery, dishes, etc. of Japan from older ages (this is on the bottom of the bottle). - Kamikaze= a divine wind, often used for the battle against enemies, that will help Japanese soldiers: in very old ages some Chinese battle ships were driven back. Here the kamikaze means 'Kamikaze Tokkotai' = suicide corps that will thrust his own fighter aircraft into the battle ship and attack. Kamikaze ('divine wind' or 'spirit wind'), officially Shinpū Tokubetsu Kōgekitai ('Divine Wind Special Attack Unit'), were a part of the Japanese Special Attack Units of military aviators who flew suicide missions against Allied naval vessels in the closing stages of the Pacific Campaign of World War II. About 3,800 kamikaze pilots died during the war, and more than 7,000 naval personnel were killed by kamikaze attacks. According to the US Navy website, the pilots preformed a special ceremony of drinking sake (using a bottle like this one to pour the liquid into a sake cup) and eating rice before flying. They were also given medals and a Katana sword during these ceremonies. The pilots also carried beloved possessions to be treasured upon death.
