Original Narrative: Some portion of the little town of Whitby*, in Yorkshire, from which we get or used to get Whitby jet, may be recognized in the picture by one acquainted with the place; but any of the small places on the Humber, or even on the southern river Severn, might have furnished the motive for the work. The dark sails of the fishing-boats, the gleaming water with their black reflections in it, the twilight sky with its heavy clouds cut up by patches and lines of light, are the true interest of the scene. The black mass of shapeless houses dotted with illuminated windows might be found up the Hudson as well as on the English coast. But nothing has been lost by this suppression of the merely local. The differences of quality of the different blacks and grays and twilight tints that make up the picture, the composition, the movements of clouds and sails and water-these are what the painter cared about in this instance, and these are all successfully reproduced. As for M. Richeton's etching further praise than that given it by Mr. Law is unnecessary. The painter was extremely well pleased with the rendering of his work, and especially with the treatment of the sky, which is the most difficult portion of it, and on the effect of which everything else depends. *Whitby is at the mouth of the little river Esk.
