He completed his undergraduate work at the University of Missouri under Max Meyer and Charles Ellwood. Meyer considered Bernard's doctoral dissertation as the completion of his introductory psychology text, The Fundamental Laws of Human Behavior, considered by Robert Wozniak to be the first behaviorist textbook.Ellwood was the first product of the University of Chicago's graduate program in Social Psychology. When published by the University of Chicago Press, Some Prolegomena to Social Psychology (1900) predated either the Ross or McDougall texts by seven years.At the University of Chicago, Bernard took courses with both Mead and Thomas, advocating the importance of both over the rest of his career.
