Description: Long and Low lovely sofa, vintage Adrian Pearsall design. Original upholstery. walnut accents.Vintage long, sleek, streamlined, Mid-Century Modern sofa, designed by Adrian Pearsall for Craft Associates. Adrian Pearsall was born in 1925 in Trumansburg, New York. Like many Mid-Century Modern artists of the time, Pearsall was a graduate of architecture school. Pearsall attended the University of Illinois after he served the Navy. Although Pearsall was skilled in architecture, he began to focus his career on modern furniture design and opened a business called Craft Associates. He and wife, Dorie, built furniture at their home in Kingston, Pennsylvania. He was known for selling his furniture at the back doors to large department stores like Macy's. Shortly after realizing the talent and possibility for success, his brother Richard helped him open a furniture factory in Pennsylvania. Like many other Mid-Century Modern designers, Adrian used geometric designs incorporating natural wood, usually walnut. Towards the end of his career, Adrian transitioned from the "Atomic Age" to a more comfortable styling of furniture in the 1970s and 80s. This inspired some of his later furniture to be bold with plush materials. Some of his most iconic designs are his Gondola Sofa, the Model 2291-C Lounge Chairs, Brutalist Chair, and the Grasshopper Lounge Chair for Craft Associates Inc. Model 990-LC to name a few.SELLS CRAFT TO LANE FURNITURE COMPANY TO FOCUS ON SAILINGAlthough Pearsall's designs looked high end, he was able to manufacture and sell his pieces more affordably than some of his fellow competition. While some of the competition did not think well of Adrian's cheaper pieces, that meant he could supply middle class America with their very own artistic and modern pieces. In 1969, Adrian would sell Craft Associates to a larger manufacturer, Lane Furniture Company so he could pursue his passion for yachting and sailing. Although his modern and affordable furniture line afforded him many luxuries, Adrian was no stranger to spending his money to help those with a greater need. Adrian Pearsall encouraged other designers with his talent for design as well his generous heart.
