Description: Here we have an extremely rare covered dish that is absolutely magnificent. Dating to the mid to late1800s, this is an extremely rare yellow ware form. Consisting of 3 pieces, an under plate, bowl and lid, the visual appearance of this is striking with its detailed molding. The lid is finely detailed with 12 chicken eggs mounded amongst grape vines with the top egg serving as the handle for the lid. There are an additional 9 eggs around the side of the dish nestled among inter-woven grape vines. The under plate is also decorated with grape vines and leaves. This yellow ware form is referred to as cane with the surface not being glazed. This allows for the great molded detail that would not be as prominent if the surface was glazed. This has an overall height of 6” to the top of the lid with the under plate measuring 8 ½” in width. The underside of the base is impressed “WS&S / 85”. Wilhelm Schiller & Son made highly detailed and sought after pottery during the mid-1800s. The lid, base and under plate are decorated with surface painted latex paint that shows normal signs of wear. All three pieces in near mint condition with only minor small chips that don’t detract. This is the rarest of three related pieces made by this potter with the other two having chicks emerging from the eggs on the lid. This is an extremely rare and spectacular piece of early yellow ware for the advanced collector. Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
