USS Porpose: this fine 283 foot fighting vessel built in Maine, was commissioned Aug 15, 1935 and ordered to the San Diego and later Pearl Harbor and Manila. She was at Olonggapo, PI when WW II began. The submarine made six war patrols and survived WW II. She earned five WW II Battle Stars in the Pacific Theater and was placed in lay-up until sold to be recycled into scrap metal in 1957.
