Description: USS LING SS-297 memorial submarine first day cover with a postmark on Jan 9, 2022 at Findlay, Ohio. Cover franked with a 55 cent flag stamp and a 3 cent USN stamp from 1946 # 935. Cachet # 2011 with a color photo of this WW II Balao Class submarine at a dock at the New Jersey Naval Museum, where she is no longer open to the public. This fighting submarine was commissioned in late 1945 and operated off Panama. She was placed in reserve until 1960, when the vessel was converted into a training submarine at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. This submarine was struck from the Navy List in 1971 and donated to the Submarine Memorial Association as a memorial. The vessel was refurbished in 1973 and opened to the public in Hackensack, New Jersey. Currently, the her site is going to be sold for redevelopment and a silt filled river and an old drawbridge block her exit to New York harbor. The Association is asking for donations so this fine WW II diesel submarine can be saved from the scrap metal yard and exhibited for future generations. Check out my other items! Free US Shipping!
