MsCalโs Yesterdays Papers CELEBRATING 25 YEARS ON EBAY! โค๏ธ๐๐งก๐๐๐บ๐๐๐ฌ๐ฎโค๏ธ๐๐๐ ============= Hereโs some information from the book these came out of: Issues of former Spanish owned republics under U.S. Military Rule Spain ceded Puerto Rico to the United States following its defeat in the Spanish American war. US military established mail service on the island shortly after arrival in 1898. These overprinted US postage stamps were used until 1900 when the transitional Porto Rico mail system was integrated into the post office department. Today Puerto Rico is a self governing commonwealth of the United States. The United States defeating Spain in the 1898 Spanish American war resulted in the treaty of Paris which formally ended the war it granted independence to the nation ofCuba. The USA took possession of CubaJanuary 1, 1899. US postage stamps were initially overprinted to send mail. The overprinted Stamps included the 1894 bureau issues and also the series of 1898โ99, the stamps that were commonly available at that time. Shortly thereafter the emerging US military-ruled island republic issued engraved pictorial stamps with themes of ships, palm trees and Columbus. The treaty of Paris was signed December 10, 1898. In this treaty resulting from the war Spain ceded Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines to the United States. Upon its secession to the United States the island of Guam as well as its postal system, were placed under the supervision of the United States Navy Department.
