Description: Really nice awards US military Humanitarian Service Medal full size. Older example 80s or early 90s production... interesting story, this came with a collection of 6 medals all acquired from a man who's wife was a high ranking medical officer in the army and who also had 2 sons in the army.... all of the medals, he had in his collection were either awarded to one of them or they acquired them directly from other service members who were award them! Sadly they didn't keep track of history or names.. still a very interesting story! The other 6x medals will be posted also - National Defense Medal , Iraq Campaign Medal, Prisoner of War Medal, new York conspcious service medal & Liberation of Kuwait Medal... I prefer to find medals like this that have a tangible story with them! Condition of the medal itself is very good, some minor wear and use but overall very nice! Maker marked on brooch LIGI.The medal itself the Humanitarian Service Medal was first awarded in 1977 retroactive to 1975.. it was created by President Gerald Ford as one of his final acts as president... it is awarded for meritorious direct participation in a significant military act or operation of a Humanitarian nature. One of its 1st uses was to be awarded to soldiers who helped evacuate refugees from Vietnam & Cambodia following the Vietnam war. Of note it was highly opposed by some senior military brass such as famed LT General Hal Moore, who bascially felt it was a participation trophy...can't imagine what he would think about medals in today's army! More recently it has been awarded for service involving Hurricane ETA & Iota // Covid 19 operations/// operation Allies refuge in Afghanistan.... An interesting and historic medal worn and awarded! Please check out the rest of this collection & all my great collectible and military offerings!
