Description: Offered in this sale is a United Kingdom 1971 New Penny. This was the first year of issue for this coin. The obverse was created by Arnold Machin and features Elizabeth II (Queen of the United Kingdom) along with the in Latin abbreviation for "by God's grace, Queen, defender of the faith." The reverse was created by Christopher Ironside and is a variation of the Beaufort Portcullis. The portcullis was the heraldic badge of the House of Beaufort, and the first Tudor king, Henry VII. A portcullis is strong gate that can be raised and lowered by chains and a winch. One or two were used to secure the entrances to fortified castles during times of attack. This coin would make a nice addition to any collection. This coin has been in circulation, but is in excellent condition due to being out of circulation for 35 to 40 years.
