Description: Two natural blown rhea eggshells from the American Ostrich Research Farm. These rhea eggshells have a long circumference of 13-13.5"" Actual auction eggs pictured. The eggs are stained from mud after storms. These eggs areempty with a 1/4" hole on the larger end, ready for you to decorate! These eggs are empty and will not hatch nor are they suitable for eating. If broken the shards are sharp and may cause injury, so be careful. The rhea is the smaller cousin of the African ostrich. Rhea eggshells are more egg-shaped than the large ball shape of the African Ostrich. Vibrant yellow when fresh, they gradually fade to cream. The process cannot be completely stopped but it can be delayed by darkness or hastened by leaving the eggs in the sun. The birds lay from April to October. We thoroughly clean our eggs inside and out. The process of collecting, emptying, washing (multiple times), drying, measuring, and sorting takes 2-3 days in good weather. Collecting the eggs involves two people in a 4 wheeler, armed with 6' PVC pipes to fend off the very powerful males sitting on their nests. And we are in our 70's, generally considered a little old for the whole steer-roping-rodeo thing. We do not sell full eggs for eating-ever. Fresh egg sales require a state-issued egg license and carry liability issues. We cannot ship internationally due to CITES regulations on endangered species.
