He was the commanding General in the 13th Air Force in the Pacific Theater and he went on to become a United States Air Force Lieutenant General and first superintendent of the United States Air Force Academy. He was known as the father of the Air Force Academy and was officially given that title on April 1, 2004, by Secretary of the Air Force James G. Roche and Air Force Chief of Staff General John P. Jumper. Harmon Hall, the main administrative building at the Air Force Academy is named in his honor, as well as is the prestigious Harmon Lecture series on military history. There is such American Military History with the Harmon brothers, in fact with their whole family, that we can only scratch the surface here. These swords were purchased directly from Kendrick Harmon, West Point graduate 1957.He was the son of Hubert R. Harmon and nephew to Millard F. Harmon, Jr. Lieutenant General Millard F. Harmon Jr was named after his father, Colonel Millard F. Harmon, Sr. (1880 graduate of West Point). Millard Harmon Jr. had an illustrious military career serving along the Mexican border with General Pershing doing duty as an observation pilot and flying in WWI as a combat pilot during the Somme offensive. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre with bronze star. In July of 1942, he was appointed Commanding general of US Army forces in the South Pacific Area. He served under US Navy Command under Admiral William F. "Bull" Halsey. Halsey described working with MF Harmon in this way: "I was particularly fortunate having Harmon as commander of the Army forces. His sound advice and wholehearted cooperation in attaining the common goal were outstanding contributions to the joint effort." Until September 1944 he commanded the Army forces in Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands. Afterward he took command of the Army Air Forces' Pacific Ocean Areas created for unity of command of the B-29 superfortress strategic bombing campaign from the Marianas Islands against Japanese home islands. Simultaneously, he served as deputy commander of the 20th Air Force, carrying out those operations under General Hap Arnold. On February 25, 1945, as passengers aboard a C87-A Liberator Express departing from Guam on a special flight, Millard F. Harmon and other senior officers were transported to Kwajalein Air Field as a first leg of their flight bound to Hickham Field, then onward for meetings about the campaign. On February 26, 1945 they took off from Kwajalein toHawaii. Their aircraft went missing over the Pacific Ocean between Kwajalein and Hawaii. For his military service, Harmon earned a distinguished service medal, distinguished flying cross, the British Most Honorable Order of the Bath, and the French Croix de Guerre with bronze star. The entire crew was officially declared dead on February 27, 1946. Harmon was one of the three highest ranking generals missing or killed in WWII, including also Lieutenant Generals Simon Bolivar Buckner and Leslie J. McNair. Harmon was memorialized in the National Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) in Hawaii. He also has a memorial at the Air Force Academy cemetery. In conclusion, it is a great honor and privilege to own these swords and be the custodian of these national treasures. Our earnest desire is that these swords be placed where they can get the honor and recognition that they deserve. We have learned such an appreciation of these brothers' service as we have researched their lives and their dedication to our country.
