Description: Three Centuries of Harvard 1636-1936. By Samuel Eliot Morison. Copyright 1936. Published by Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1936. 512 pp. Measures 6” x 8.5.” First edition, first printing based on matching copyright and publication dates, including the date on the front cover. HCDJ. Original price intact. A very scarce first edition / first printing of Morison’s seminal work on the history of Havard, with the original dust jacket (price unclipped). As of the time of this listing, I do not see another first printing with the jacket for sale (please see the full condition description). Written by a Harvard graduate, the publisher’s note in the inside jacket cover describes Morison’s account as follows: “With a mind saturated in the lore and tradition at his command, the author has sat down to tell the whole story informally and briefly. . . . The result is a marvellously entertaining volume, the history of Harvard that everyone has been waiting for, a model of vitalized historical writing.” Condition: The dust jacket has chips and holes throughout, scuffing, edgewear, debris, and tanning. The actual boards have some light staining and edgewear to the boards, along with bumped spine edges. There is a name and date on the ffep. The inside covers / pastedowns have light fox marks / tanning. The initial and back endpages have some light fox marks. Some foxing to outer edge of text block. The pages have some light tanning, not affecting readability. There may be an occasional mark or stain in the text pages, but overall, they are clean. The binding has only mild laxity, with no splitting / cracking, and all pages are holding. Please see photos.
