Description: William Hogarth lived from 1697 to 1764. He was a painter, engraver, and satirist. This thick folio is a compilation of his works in fine steel engravings. 12 x 9.5 x 2.5 inches. It also contains a worthy introduction to his life. This is a well-preserved antiquarian tome, comprising an extensive collection of his engravings. His work ranged from excellent realistic portraiture to comic strip-like series of pictures called "modern moral subjects." Much of his work, vicious at times, poked fun at contemporary politics and customs. Bound in publisher's original half-leather, with gilt-ruled boards and blind-tooling and gilt-stamped spine, with gilt-stamped portrait of Hogarth to the front board. This is your chance to own a nice antique book containing stunning "social commentary" in art from a master satirist. His friend, actor David Garrick, composed the following inscription for Hogarth's tombstone: Farewell great Painter of MankindWho reach'd the noblest point of ArtWhose pictur'd Morals charm the MindAnd through the Eye correct the Heart. If Genius fire thee, Reader, stay, If Nature touch thee, drop a Tear:If neither move thee, turn away, For Hogarth's honour'd dust lies here.
