Description: ASIN : B000BP5I6A Reviews: 5.0 out of 5 stars A delectable collectionReviewed in the United States on January 1, 2018Verified PurchaseOriginally, published in 1938, The National Binding of the American Woman’s Cook Book, the 1942 edition appropriately, subtitled the War Time Edition contains a smorgasbord of recipes of dishes, desserts, beverages, and much more. Indeed, the book in its self is a historic source of information when one considers the contents and when it was published during the Second World War and when food items that are the essentials when cooking from scratch, butter and sugar and eggs and milk that had to be rationed. Aside from those important facts, many that have not live through the war or experienced rationing food, may never imagine. The entire book is a helpful source of information for the beginner cook or in general, preparing a meal on one’s own for the first time. Although the title speaks of the period when women, especially young women and mothers were expected to cook for the family and a few references and phrases may need looking up in terms of defining as they are not used often, which slightly shows the vintage and dated aspects. In spite of those minor elements, the book will appeal to anyone wanting to gain the basic skills of cooking. The format is detailed and organized, the tabs within the page binding label important sections from the types of menus, meats, cakes, to preparation in wartime. For readers that are familiar to old dictionaries, the tabs bear the similar format, easy to navigate. And from the beginning pages, editor Ruth Berolzheimer writes with much detail of the how to – dining etiquette, how to buy food, and food values and meal planning. No doubt, this is a book to feast one’s eyes upon with the hundreds of recipes and the endless opportunities to prepare the most delightful dishes. And for readers of history, a source that one may consider of the period in which it was written that only emphasizes how some of the norms of dining have somewhat changed in over 70 years. But most of all, that the culinary arts definitely, show that preparing any food item is a work of art in war time. Uriah5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic Cookbook Well Worth OwningReviewed in the United States on December 16, 2012Verified PurchaseThis is a classic cookbook that is worth owning. It isn't filled with recipes that are made with exotic ingredients that you have to hunt for but honest simple easy to make recipes. You won't find recipes for things like "Scallops with Lemongrass Reduction Sauce" but you will find recipes like "Braised Pork Chops",classic "White Sauce", "Blanc-Mange" better known as "Cornstarch Pudding" (good for little ones when they aren't up to eating). This book covers just about anything that you would possibly need from buying food to school lunches to cooking for two. There is a special section called "Wartime Cookery" at the time of publication America was in the middle of World War II and things like sugar, coffee and processed foods were rationed. This neat little section gives a 30 day menu complete with breakfasts, lunches and dinners complete with desserts for a family of five at only $15.00 a week which would be about $200 today. No you aren't eating beans and rice every night either. This cookbook should be in everyone's collection. This would make a wonderful gift whether or not they are just learning how to cook or have been cooking for years Mary5.0 out of 5 stars A true gem!Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2016Verified PurchaseThis book is a true treasure! If you enjoy vintage cookbooks and/or the Wartime era you should include this one in your collection. These types of gems are difficult to locate anymore and I am glad to have found it. The used one which I received is in very good condition for its age and will be treasured among my collection. I've already made the pumpkin pie recipe and love it! I grew up on the simple homemade from-scratch recipes of the Greatest Generation and these recipes capture those memories for me. Anxious to try more! Customer Service is our Priority.
