Description: It was a new century, and the life of the average person was fundamentally changing as this book “The Cottage Physician” is a testament too. General, and especially medical, knowledge was being shared with the lay person and there was a portion of the populace that was now literate enough to take advantage of that knowledge. The publisher states, “The object of “The Cottage Physician is fourfold: 1) to prevent sickness; 2) to promote health; 3) to diminish human suffering; 4) to lessen the expense of maintain the blessing of health in the home. Over twenty physicians, surgeons, and pharmacists have been consulted and employed in the preparation of this work, endeavoring to embody only the very best and most approved remedies and methods of treatment known to advance practitioners.” The “The Cottage Physician” was first published in 1893-1895 with few copies of any of the editions (including 1897 or 1900) available today. This lack of availably might indicate it was not the most popular home medical book from that time, but it does have some unique additions like the “King’s Anatomical chart – Paper Manikin made Expressly for the Cottage Physician,” different colored anatomical drawings, and “nearly 200 black and white illustrations”. Note: It is assumed that all of the body parts are present in the anatomical chart but, it is extremely delicate, so we did not open. Condition: Beautiful, textured burgundy leather heavy boards have a debossed pattern around the front and rear board edges. The title, author, and the publisher emblem are debossed in gold gilt to the 5 banded spine with a larger title in gold gilt debossed to the front board – all of which are bright and readable with no rubbing. Overall, the boards are in excellent condition – bright with few blemishes although the rear board has sun fading and there is rubbing along the top and bottom edges and along the front gutter. The corners of the front board are sharp with little wear but the rear corners are worn through to the paper. The spine and binding are straight and tight, hinges are firmly attached to the decorative green flower endpapers. The text block is firm but with age tanning throughout. The interior pages are clean with no tears, cracks, or previous owner marks. 646 pages including a Prescription Register, two pages for Household Memorandum, an Index, and an Index for Quick Reference.
