Toshiharu Maeda, the lord of Kaga Daishoji, noticed the discovery of pottery stone at Kanayama. He ordered Saijiro Goto, a famous alchemist, to learn pottery in Hizen and built a kiln in Kutani. However, in the early 1700s, the kiln suddenly became mysteriously abandoned. The pieces fired during this period are called Ko-Kutani, and are said to be the pinnacle of Japanese ceramics. Variety of Painting Styles After the closure of Ko-Kutani kilns, many kilns emerged, creating a variety of painting styles, including the Kasugayama kiln (mokubei), the revival of Ko-Kutani (Yoshidaya kiln), the red-elaborated Miyamotoya kiln, and the gold-brocade Eiraku kiln. During the Meiji period, thanks to the efforts of Michikai Saida and Shozo Kutani, Kutani ware became an export star.
