Description: From Worthpoint: Sterling China Company - History B. E. Allen and a group of investors founded the Sterling China Company in Wellsville, Ohio, in 1917. Sterling China's success resulted in the addition of new buildings and the continuous upgrading of equipment. Sterling China installed the first dipping machine in the hotel china industry. Sterling China pioneered the use of “inlay” patterns in the hotel ware industry. During World War II, Sterling supplied a tremendous amount of dinnerware for the armed forces. By the 1950s, Sterling China was one of the three largest vitrified hotel and restaurant ware producers. Its commercial china was used by airlines, hotels, railroad companies, restaurants, and steamship companies. Sterling China operated a plant in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, between 1951 and 1977. Its Caribe China was made there. Sterling acquired its production facility from the Iroquois China Company. In 1954 Sterling China absorbed the Scammell China Company and its Lamberton China line. Between 1959 and 1969, Sterling China owned and operated the Wellsville China Company. Although Sterling China's main plant is in Wellsville, Ohio, it uses an East Liverpool address as its "official" address. The Wellsville, Ohio, Sterling plant laid off its entire staff and ceased production on December 23, 2003. The plant reopened in January and hired back some workers. In 2004, Castle Wells, headed by CEO David Bruno, gained control of the assets of Sterling China. It acquired the kilns, production equipment, and warehouse stock. Castle Wells created Sterling China USA. Castle Wells moved Sterling China’s headquarters and showroom to Wellsville, New York.
