Description: St Elizabeth of Hungary –8.5x11" Saint Elizabeth of Hungary is still famous today for her almsgiving to the poor. She was the daughter of the King of Hungary, and she married the ruler of Thuringia, a German state. Often she would smuggle food and clothing from the castle to give to those in need, so much so that members of the court resented her. One day, while carrying out loaves of bread in the folds of her robe, she was stopped by the courtesans. They demanded to know what she carried. It is said she opened the robe and it was full of roses. This miracle proved to her husband that her works were of God. Born in 1207, she learned her Christian zeal from followers of St. Francis, who was her contemporary. Married at 14, widowed at 20, after her husband’s death she joined a convent and continued to serve the poor until her death four years later. Her Feast Day is November 17. She is the Patron Saint of bakers, the homeless, widows, and young brides.
