Description: • For Your Consideration: • From the SOVIET UNION: • But in ENGLISH: • A (RARE) VINTAGE HARDCOVER edition of a Children’s Fairy-Tale: • • “THE THREE FAT MEN”(Foreign Languages Publishing House, Moscow, 1965?) (Hardcover, First Edition Thus?) • BY YURI OLESHA • WITH (WONDERFUL) COLOR & BLACK-AND-WHITE DRAWINGS by B. KALAUSHIN • “The scene is set in a fantastic land ruled by three greedy fat men, who are engrossed in eating and entertainment in the palace. Meanwhile, there are curious happenings outside the palace walls. You will learn all about this and much more when you read this wise, merry tale that is so like the truth. THE THREE FAT MEN, a favourite with all Soviet children, has run to over 30 editions, it was made into a film, and is currently being performed at many theatres in the Soviet Union…. YURI OLESHA (1899-1960) is a well-known Soviet author. His novel ENVY, hs short stories and plays are tremendously popular. His fantasy for children, THE THREE FAT MEN is one of his best works.” —THE PUBLISHER • “YURI OLESHA’s THREE FAT MEN is a fairy-tale, a fantasy full of unusual transformations and exciting, vivid adventures.” ―LITERATURNAYA GAZETA • “There was something of BEETHOVEN in YURI OLESHA, a great power, even in his voice. His eyes saw a wealth of magnificent, convincing detail. He described them simply, accurately and well….” —KONSTANTIN PAUSTOVSKY • “It's funny, if somewhat scary, how when you’re a kid you don’t really see even explicit political propaganda in your favorite books. When I was five, or seven, or whatever I was when I read THE THREE FAT MEN for the first time, it was, to me, a book about brave little dancer SUOK and romantic HEIR TUTTI and smart DOCTOR GASPAR. Now it is unmistakably a book about Revolution and Class Struggle…. What remains unchanged though is that this tale is written extremely well. OLESHA has a great sense of language and his unexpected and witty metaphors cracked me up more than once….”—DARYA CONMIGO, GOODREADS REVIEW • “Magical. Vividly described. Imaginative. Childish in the best and most wonderful sense. Colorful. Fantastical. Unpredictable. Adventurous. The best.”—NICALBA, GOODREADS REVIEW • “This is the first full-ledged novel I finished reading. (An adventure I undertook in second grade.) It was a children’s novel with a story line full of twists that would scare GRISHAM.” —BOOKWORM SPEAKS (BLOG) • “OLESHA’s tale reminded me strongly of GEORGE ORWELL’s ANIMAL FARM (even though it is from a completely opposite ideology) and CORNELIA FUNKE’s INKHEART trilogy with their clear demarcation of right and wrong, good and evil.”—CHASING BAWA (BLOG) • • For other details about this book, please see below. • TITLE: “THE THREE FAT MEN” AUTHOR: YURI OLESHA TRANSLATOR: FAINNA GLAGOLEVA DRAWINGS: B.
