The flash is in near mint condition. You will be hard pressed to tell the flash is not brand new outside of some normal, very light wear to the AF Illuminator and rear panel, only noted with close inspection in bright lighting. This flash requires an adapter for use with Sony E/FE mount camera bodies. It has the original style shoe for Sony Alpha DSLRs and SLTs. The HVL-F42AM is the upgraded replacement for the F36AM, with slightly more power output (a GN of 42m vs. 36m) and a few extra important features. The head pivots and bounces as before but now locks in at specific detents. The diffuser is now recessed and attached to the head – you simply pull it out and flip it down for use. You will never lose it! The F42AM has manual power settings, a big feature not found on the F36AM, with full, ½, ¼, and so on down to 1/32 power. There is a “test” fire button as well for easier use in portrait/light meter shooting and set up. This was a very popular Sony flash while in production (now replaced by the HVL-F43AM) in that it offers many features including full DSLR compatibility, dual channel wireless shooting, a powerful guide number of 42 meters (about 128 feet), high speed synch and wide-angle coverage to 24mm with the internal zoom head and diffuser. Sony soft case included. This flash is not compatible with original Maxxum 5000/7000/9000 film cameras but will work with all other Maxxum film cameras as well as all Sony Alpha DSLRs and SLTs.
