Description: Piecing together a nice set of PL and DMPL Morgans can be quite challenging, even for long-time collectors. It is one of most rewarding sets to put together, but it requires both patience and time to accomplish. Of almost 8 million Morgan dollars certified by NGC, PCGS, ICG, and ANACS ... less than 300,000 are certified PL and DMPL ... less than 4% of the total population of all graded Morgans. Consider that in the last 20 years, the known populations of PL and DMPL Morgans have increased less than 15%. The great silver dollar rushes, the multitudes of submitted dollars, the auctioning of sizeable collections has produced very little increase in DMPL populations. Even with steadily rising values, the needle has hardly moved. Apparently, PL and DMPL dollars are not so easy to find. I have compiled a reference chart showing the pops and percentages of the most available PL/DM Morgans: Total graded Morgan dollars ( ANACS, ICG, NGC, PCGS ) ... 7,639,244 100.0 % Combined total of all PL/DMPL graded dollars ... 282,653 only 3.7 % of the total population The 25 most populous PL/DMPL graded dollars with their respective percentage of PL/DM graded dollars: Date: Population: Percentage of total PL/DM:01. 1880-S 33,750 11.9 %02. 1881-S 22,887 8.103. 1883-CC 17,326 6.104. 1884-CC 16,364 5.8 05. 1879-S 12,963 4.6 06. 1884-O 11,637 3.907. 1883-O 9,814 3.508. 1885 8,793 3.1 09. 1885-O 8,774 3.110. 1904-O 8,378 3.0 11. 1887 7,067 2.512. 1885-CC 5,916 2.1 13. 1882-S 5,411 1.914. 1881-CC 5,395 1.915. 1878-CC 5,166 1.816. 1898-O 4,459 1.617. 1878 rev 78 4,410 1.618. 1886 4,383 1.6 19. 1896 4,324 1.520. 1878-S 4,306 1.5 21. 1881-O 3,993 1.422. 1883 3,359 1.4 23. 1880-CC 3,064 1.324. 1888-O 3,060 1.325. 1898 3,040 1.3--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Total of these 25 228,929 80.2 % Total of all the other71 dates combined 53,724 19.8 % 35. 1879 1,520 .5 % ( of total of all graded PL & DM Morgans ) Regarding the 1879-P, there are only 887 graded in MS63 PL and better ... that is less than 1 in 8,500 of the total population of all graded Morgans.
