ROGER DE PILES THE ART OF PAINTING old antique book RARE 1700S LIVES OF PAINTERS

With Reflexions on the Works of the most Celebrated Masters, and of the several Schools of Europe, as well ancient as modern. Being the most perfect Work of the Kind extant. Translated from the French of Monsieur De Piles. To which is added, An Essay towards an English School. There is no frontispiece on the book, so through using clues throughout the book, I have managed to find out exactly what it is - the only thing I'm not so sure of is what edition it is. No clues to say it's a later edition, so maybe it's the first english? I have found out most details about it through this website, which looks like it is the same book which is held by the RA. I don't think anything else is missing, apart from that though. The rest of the binding to the pages is excellent. Leather cover with gold around the edge. Title panel on top of spine reading 'de piles on painting', although it is worn so you can't see all of the first word - hence the detective trail! It measures approx 21 x 13 x 3.5cm. There is some age browning to the pages, and some inscriptions on the pastedown (shown on last photo). But the paper is good and robust, the printing is clear and bold still, so easy to read without the threat of heavy damage.
