Description: 19th CENTURY HELIOGRAVURE RE-WORK BY CHARLES AMAND-DURAND (1831-1905) OF REMBRANDT'S ETCHING "YOUNG MAN IN A VELVET CAP" [thought to be the artist Ferdinand Bol, Dutch painter-etcher, 1616-1680] Identified and catalogued as Bartsch 268. Excellent condition. No problems at all. Well printed on thick off-white "laid" paper. Margins intact, the platemark line is clearly visible. A nice sharp impression. Nicely age-toned, and bears the watermark/filigrane of the E. Desloye company (see photos taken on the lightbox) which puts the impression at 1870-1880. Rembrandt signature and date 1637 can be seen at top left corner. Size of main image is 93 x 80 millimetres. Total size of sheet is 234 x 172 millimetres, so there are good wide margins for matting/framing should you wish to do so. Online reference: see Metropolitan Museum of Art, 29.107.9. Other major museums should also have it. LIterature: Bartsch 268; Hind 151; New Hollstein (Rembrandt) II.18.164. Charles Amand Durand developed the process of heliogravure in the 1860s. This was much admired by Georges Duplessis (1834-1899), Curator of the Prints Department of the National Library in Paris. The two men decided to collaborate on a lengthy project to re-create some of the Old Master prints in the French collection, particularly the etchings of Rembrandt; Duplessis provided the originals, early states, and Durand used them to meticulously recreate them by heliogravure. The results were published in two volumes with the imprint of the Hachard publishers, under the auspices (and with the total involvement) of the French National Library. The works proved so popular that subsequent editions were printed in France in the period 1860-1880.
