Description: A rare Wedgwood pearlware shaving pot 'Heroes Bearded and Beardless' designed by Richard Redgrave A.R.A. for Summerly's Art Manufacturers c1845. The cylindrical tapering body is adorned with heads of various poets and poetic inscriptions "By the length of his beard can you measure a man? Poet or Hero? - I doubt if you can. Bearded or shaven - Wit comes from heaven." Atop the hinged pewter mounted lid sits a parian ware figure of Alfred Lord Tennyson in ruminant pose. The base is stamped 'R.Redgrave ARA' and impressed 'Wedgwood' with Victorian diamond registration mark. Artist Richard Redgrave became the first Director of South Kensington Museum, now the Victoria and Albert. A superb collector's piece in excellent condition.
