ONE SUMMER IN HAWAII BY HELEN MATHER ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NEW YORK CASSELL PUBLISHING COMPANY 104 & 106 FOURTH AVENUE Copyright, 1891 BY HELEN MATHER. Hardbound in very good condition, 298 pages includes a FRONTISPIECE, INTRODUCTORY CHAPTER, a detailed table of CONTENTS, 12 b/w PHOTO PLATES plus numerous line-type illustrations throughout and a POSTCRIPTUM, no dust jacket, likely none issued. Boards are covered in red and gray cloth, in quarter board fashion with titles and graphic designs blind stamped, brown on tan and gold on the red quarter board portions, page tops are gold. There is light soiling to the surfaces, however, the cover illustrations is still quite pronounced. Edge wear is noted primately at the ends of the spine and at the corners with some spits and wearing through, but no excessive fraying or fabric loss. For a volume of near 120 years, it is still very solid, very attractive. The interior reveals the contents to be clean and still firm with all pages firmly bound and hinges intact. Age toning is modest with a couple foxing spots on the leading edge of half title and on the tissue covering the frontispiece. A slight forward lean is noted but overall, it is a clean, attractive with no ownership indications and no marks, creases or tears. "INTRODUCTORY CHAPTER." (Excerpt) "While spending the winter of 1889 and 1890 in Southern California and San Francisco, I was repeatedly asked if I should not visit ‘the Islands’ before going away; and was told that ‘A run down to the Islands is the thing, you know; everybody goes to the Islands.’ What islands they referred to I had not the slightest idea, supposing them to be in near proximity to San Francisco, from the familiar way people spoke of ‘running down’ to them, and perhaps the kind of excursion one takes when going from New York to Coney Island." "The Sandwich Islands have always been floating about in my mind in a vague, uncertain way, never having been able to quite locate them, any more than I have the heaven I hope some day to reach." "The subjoined pages have been transcribed from a journal kept to please my sister; and I have been induced, perhaps unwisely, to print and put them into covers." Mrs. Mather does a wonderful job of relating her experiences, which she compliments with a good number of photos and drawings. Although perhaps not the most thorough and certainly not the most objective Island study obtainable, her manner is entertaining and endearing. Of note, the Author’s visit to the Islands coincided with the passing of King Kalakaua in San Francisco and the return of his body to Hawaii, thus the last chapter of her book is a POSTCRIPTUM in reference to this event. ONE SUMMER IN HAWAII was included in the HAWAIIAN NATIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHY 1780-1900, Volume 4, 1881-1900, Compiled and Annotated b David W. Forbes, University of Hawai’I Press, Honolulu in Association with Hordern House, Sydney, Copyright 2003, pages 410-411, reference entry 4285. Although not a stated 1st Edition, I have no knowledge of it having been reprinted. Due to the limited number available coupled with the author’s charming style; this has become quite a rare and desired publication that in recent years has been reprinted as a modern paperback for informational purposes. For collectors, however, this lovely copy of ONE SUMMER IN HAWAII is a memento of a by-gone touring era in Hawaii, one that can still today be touched and enjoyed, a prize addition to an Island library.
