Description: About this work: A lovely 19th century portrait of Queen Charlotte after Thomas Frye (1710-1762). This portrait of the Queen depicts her wearing her vast array of jewelry; William Vile’s jewel cabinet was made to house these magnificent jewels. The portrait is based on the mezzotint by Thomas Frye, who was one of the most successful mezzotinters of his era, as well as a portraitist in oil, pastel and miniature. Frye, who was born in Ireland, painted a portrait of Frederick, Prince of Wales in 1741. Over twenty years later his intention to make a portrait of Queen Charlotte took him to the theater; this was presumably the only place where Frye could capture her likeness in the flesh. It is said that the Queen, seeing the artist at work, obligingly turned her face towards him, in effect granting him an informal sitting. Antique oil paintings of Queen Charlotte appear to be quite scarce compared to other royals of the time. This work is oil on canvas laid to a wood stretcher. It is unframed and appears to be unsigned. Size: 11 5/8 inches tall by 9 5/8 inches wide (painting) 11 7/8 inches tall by 9 7/8 inches wide (stretcher) Provenance: Private collection, NJ; Acquired from the above Condition: Scattered restoration throughout, including repaired tear to the left of her face extending into her floral veil.
