Description: FEATURED IS A PAIR OF ANTIQUE GERMAN CONTINENTAL 800 HANAU SILVER MINIATURES OF AN ANCIENT BAROQUE FORM: A SOUP TUREEN & WATER PITCHER c 1890 The tureen measures 1.5" from tip of finial to bottom of feet and 2" from outer rims of handles. The lid is removable, but does have a tight seal. The pitcher measures 1.25" from lip of pitcher to bottom of feet and 1.5" from handle to far edge of pitcher. The German hallmarking system was unified in 1888 by sovereign decree. Both "sideboard" or serving pieces carry the crescent and crown (Halbmond und Reichskrone) marks required for silver. They are both marked as containing 800 / 1000 silver content. The Hanau silversmith marks are not too legible (and I do believe both pieces were from the same shop). That was by design. The city of Hanau was long considered as being of a free trade mindset and the silversmiths were of that mindset, not being too keen on close supervision by the guilds. They concentrated on making silver in the ancient forms - in this case, the intricate Baroque style. The hallmarks were designed to look as old as the pieces created ... they just couldn't be read that easily. The Hanau silversmiths' goal was to please the public and they did that by collectively producing up to the turn of the 20th Century a mass quantity of what are called "sideboard" pieces ... serving pieces that would be found on the sideboard of a home's dining room. Hence the tureen and pitcher. Miniatures such as these might have even been made by the silversmith and given to the purchaser of the "life size" version of the same pieces ... a custom still in evidence by some quality artisans today. To truly appreciate these pieces, it is critical to have an understanding of the tradition of German silversmiths and how Hanau silver fits into that tradition.
