Description: "Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant" Volume 1 (of 2). 1885 Charles L. Webster & Co. (printed by J.J. Little). Apparent first edition (no edition detail provided). Stamped volume number 8296. 584 pages, with frontispiece, 1 additional etching print, many maps, and a pull-out letter facsimile. Hardcover, no dust jacket, as issued. This offer is only for this volume 1 of the autobiography. It was separated from its pair some time in the past. This is a book with a history. This book in general has a very interesting history - Mark Twain convincing Grant to write it through his pain of cancer of the tongue, Grant's finishing the book just before perishing, Twain publishing the book through his Charles L. Webster publishing company, selling the book through subscription, providing Grant's widow a huge check for royalties. There is a great story here of this book. This particular copy also has stories, as can be seen through the various writings and stamps. At one point, based on a stamp on the inner front cover, this copy was part of the Army and Navy Book Club from Albany, NY. There is also a stamp of a former owner or bookseller - T.W. Getman, West Troy, NY. There is also a handwritten note that the book was purchased by G.W. Sonderland on his first trip to Chickamauga from the University of Chattanooga Library in March, 1964. The date October, 1918 is written on the title page. A name I can not make out is written on the copyright page, perhaps "Mrs. J.D.Faberge". Not documented on the book, but offered here to provide additional history, I found the book in an estate sale in a beautiful architect-designed house on a dramatic wooded lot in Winfield, Illlinois among a large number of history and art books. The condition of the book is rough, but despite its flaws it does look good on a shelf. Photos are of the book on offer. See the photos for additional insights into content and condition of this historic memoir by US Grant, published by Mark Twain.
