More than 170 species of animals are kept in its 13-hectare area. Among its biggest attractions are white tigers and sea lions. The first step towards establishing the future zoo was the activity of the then Ornithological Association for Northern Bohemia. Its members first founded a Geflugelpark (a kind of bird corner) on July 2, 1895, and later also an aviary in the city park open to the public (1904). Another expansion of this area was the planting of swans on the nearby Jezirek and the establishment of a roe deer enclosure in the nearby meadow. The center of the area became a wooden house in the Tyrolean style, called the Hornbill's Nest, brought here by the builder Alfred Hübner from the German-Czech Exhibition in 1907. Around it, the area gradually grew until it was thought about turning it into a small zoo. This effort failed during the First World War due to lack of funds.Between the wars, the Liberec garden was almost unknown, and since the opening of the Prague Zoo in 1931, it was almost isolated. Despite the efforts of its director, it did not expand much at this time. In the years 1939–1945, the garden kept approximately 500 animals of 134 speciesIn 1957, a bird pavilion and an enclosure for bear cubs were established, and in 1960, a stable for zebras and a cabin for bison. The number of visitors also increased from 150,000 in the fifties to 330,000 in 1960.In 1989, the most successful year so far, it was visited by over 470,000 people. The ZOO currently keeps 170 species of animals in a total number of almost 1000 animals (Wiki).
