Description: Original 1919 color lithographed "Temporary Map" of Czechoslovakia, showing political boundaries that were still in dispute. The new country of Czechoslovakia had been proclaimed on October 28, 1918, just before the end of World War One, and the locations of its borders were in dispute when this map was drawn, with the Czech army at war on two fronts, against Poland in Silesia and against Hungary in Slovakia and Ruthenia. The map's legend identifies international boundaries "to be decided by plebiscite," the limit of occupation by the Allied Commission, interprovincial boundaries, and international boundaries claimed by Czechoslovakia, as well as those decided by the Peace Conference. A large area bisected by the Oder River is labeled "Plebiscite by communes will determine the sovereignty." Four provincial regions of Czechoslovakia are named: Cechy, Morava, Slezsko, and Slovensko. Among other names places and features are Pilsen, the Danube River, Zwittau, Brunn, Troppau, Pressburg, Oppeln, Kosel, the Carpathian Mountains, Miskolcz, Great Schutt Island, Iglau, Prague, and Budweis. The image area measures 26.5 x 46 cm [10½" x 18"], and details include railroads, cities, towns, and natural features. Condition: The map is in excellent condition, bright and clean, with no marks, rips, or tears. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. It was compiled and copyrighted by C.S. Hammond & Company and published by Sears Roebuck in The New World Loose Leaf Atlas, Chicago, 1919. A message printed on the reverse side says that a permanent colored map will "replace this temporary map as soon as soon as the boundaries of Czechoslovakia are determined." Buy with confidence!
