The handmade two-tone English Pewter ring depicts the Alchemy Gothic Alchemist's skull on two crossed thigh bones with the alchemical 'Rose of Wisdom' below it. The OR Philosophy ring is a graphic representation of the philosophy of 'Perfection unto Death'. Symbolism: The OR Philosophy ring combines two powerful alchemical symbols: the skull (and bones) and the rose. In the alchemical process, the skull or 'caput mortem' represents the first stage of the Work called 'nigredo', a state of death and decay (dying to the world) necessary for the Work to begin. Paradoxically by being so resistant to decay, the skull (as well as bones in general) also represent that which survives Death and the possibility of life beyond Death (the ability to transcend Death itself). Because of this, alchemists use the skull to represent the vessel for the transmutation process. The rose is the alchemical symbol of Wisdom, and the 'Great Work' of alchemy is called the Rosarium. Symbolized by the transmutation of base metals to gold, the alchemical 'Great Work' is actually the transmutation of the practitioner into pure Spirit. To find the Philosopher's Stone is to attain the Absolute and acquire Gnosis or perfect knowledge. Handcrafted English Pewter: This ring is handmade in England using the highest quality English Pewter. English Pewter is a lead-free, zinc-free alloy which is valued second only to silver. English Pewter is much harder to craft than the low-grade zinc and lead alloys (which contain a significant amount of toxic impurities) that are still being used in some jewelry manufacture today. Because these rings are handcrafted and hand-finished, each one is unique; and there are slight variations between individual pieces. Also, slight imperfections in the finished product are normal, expected, and add to the unique handmade character of each piece.
