Description: A very fine Dutch old master engraving by Zacharias Dolendo (1561–1601). This is a rare example of Dolendo's "Andromeda chained to the Rock", she is about to be rescued by Perseus, seen in the sky, upper right, from the creature seen below. The plate measures 4 5/8 x 3 1/8 inches and has 1/8 inch margins all around. There are ink notations and the top half of a collection stamp along the bottom edge and a full and different collection stamp on the reverse. Paper has toned and shows some handling creases and grime, one thin spot on reverse, otherwise in excellent condition Zacharias Dolendo (1561–1601) was a Dutch engraver. He was the brother of Bartholomeus Dolendo, whom he surpassed both in style and in correctness. He was born at Leyden and is said by Huber to have been a disciple of Jacob De Ghein. Dolendo often provided designs for and published his engravings. According to van Mander, he made a good living, but died young after leading a riotous life, with too much drinking. There are some portraits by this master, which are not inferior in neatness to those by J. Wierix; his plates are frequently marked with a cipher. There are by him: William, Prince of Orange; half-length, in armour. 1581. Andromeda chained to the Rock; finely drawn; after his own design. Adam and Eve embracing, whilst Eve receives the Apple from the Serpent; after B. Spranger. St. Martin dividing his Cloak with two Beggars; after the same. The Continence of Scipio; after A. Bloemaert. The Virgin and Infant, with two Angels; after J. De Ghein. The Crucifixion; after the same. A Set of small Plates of the Gods and Goddesses; copied from the larger ones by H. Goltzius. biography drawn from: Bryan's Dictionary of Painters and Engravers (A–K). I (3rd ed.). London: George Bell & Sons - 1886
