Description: Original oil painting on canvas by Dutch/French artist Guus van Dongen (1878-1946). The painting is a pure seascape with sailboats near the horizon line. Augusta Van Dongen Preitinger and her husband, Kees Van Dongen (1877-1968), were both well known artists in the early 20th century Paris art scene. This painting is signed in the lower right and measures 13 x 16 1/8 inches. The canvas has been relined, but I can see no evidence of a tear or overpainting on the surface, the canvas is mounted on French stretchers. The varnish is somewhat yellowed with age and would brighten considerably with a cleaning, otherwise in excellent condition. Guus van Dongen (1878-1946) was a German-born Dutch painter who lived most of her adult life in Paris. Born Juliana Augusta Preitinger in Cologne, her family moved to Rotterdam, the Netherlands and became Dutch citizens. When she showed artistic talent as a child, her family encouraged her to get art training. Preitinger met Kees van Dongen when they were painting students at the art academy in Rotterdam. They married on July 11, 1901 in Paris and soon had a son, who died shortly after he was born in December 1901. They also had a daughter, Augusta, born in 1905, who survived. That year, the family moved to an apartment in the Bateau Lavoir in Montmartre, where they were neighbors and became friends with Pablo Picasso and his companion Fernande Olivier. In 1914, Guus took their daughter to Rotterdam for the summer to see their families. The outbreak of World War I prevented them from returning to Paris until 1918. By then, Kees van Dongen had started a relationship with Léa Alvin and Augusta and Kees divorced in 1921. Guus van Dongen continued her painting career in Paris and had an exhibit in 1921 at the Galerie Artes. She died in Paris in 1946.
