Description: November 27 1947 Newspaper Ilfracombe & Bournemouth Express Train Crash Hampshire Front page only /1 page This was published on 25th March 1948 by Ministry of Transport. "The trains concerned were the 3.5 pm. from Bournemouth West to Waterloo and the 12.15 p.m. from Ilfracombe to Waterloo, carrying about 200 and 400 passengers respectively. The former had been waiting for several minutes at an automatic signal between Fleet and Farnborough, at Danger through a failure of the signalling power supply, while its driver endeavoured to get into contact with the signalman at Farnborough by telephone. The following Ilfracombe train collided with it at about 20 m.p.h., severely damaging its three rear coaches; a third up passenger train, the 4.0 p.m. from Salisbury to Waterloo, travelling on a parallel line, was fortunately stopped just clear of the wreckage. I regret to report that one passenger was killed and that a second (a Company's boilermaker travelling on duty) died from his injuries; eleven passengers received injuries necessitating treatment in hospital, where five were detained, and eleven others, also the driver and fireman of the Ilfracombe train, sustained minor injuries or shock."
