Description: NGC ( VF ) Numerian AD283-284 Aurelianianus / Antoninianus In the summer of 283, he assumed the throne following his father Carus, amid a conflict with the Sāsānians. At that time, Numerian held the position of emperor in the East, while his brother Carinus governed the West. Despite leading the army back home, Numerian fell ill with a debilitating eye disease. In the latter part of 284, upon reaching the Bosporus, Numerian was discovered lifeless in the imperial coach. Diocletian would eventually take hold after efforts by the officers to hide the death of Numerian from the troops was discovered. Diocletian swore an oath that he had nothing to do with the death and publicly executed one of the officers responsible for hiding the truth.
