Description: NGC FINE Roman AE of Julian II (AD 360 -363 ) Issued as AugustusJulian II, born in 331 in Constantinople, was the son of Julius Constantius and Basilina, his second wife. Julius Constantius was the half-brother of Emperor Constantine I. Julian's paternal grandparents were Western Roman Emperor Constantius Chlorus and his second wife, Flavia Maximiana Theodora. He belonged to the Constantinian dynasty and served as Roman Emperor from 361 to 363. Summoned by Constantius II in Mediolanum (Milan), Julian was appointed "Caesar of the West" on November 6, 355, and married to Constantius' sister, Helena. Initially as Caesar, not Augustus (Emperor), his primary goal was to expel the barbarians who had breached the Rhine frontier. He gained the favor of the civilian population through his equitable governance. Julian focused on rebuilding the region, fostering a stable and peaceful economy in the aftermath of the barbarian incursions. Julian earned the moniker of the last pagan Roman Emperor as he tried to revive the old pagan Roman religious customs.
