However, this truism falls apart when talking about Billiards of the quality found in Ser Jacopo's Gem Series.At this level, the Billiard becomes one of the most rare as opposed to most popular.Why? I'll explain… While hand makers of briar pipes are artists (certainly Giancarlo was one) they are also practical in a business sense as well.When "gifted" with a special block of briar…light and with excellent tight grain…they have a decision of how to successfully bring that excellence to fruition as a great pipe.If the pipe maker decides to craft a Billiard he's hoping that everything goes perfectly…no sand spots, no flaws, etc. Everyone knows what a Billiard looks like.What can he do if there are inclusions in the briar? Not much if he was making a Billiard…perhaps cut it down to be a Pot.If, on the other hand, he were making a less well defined shape or a freehand, he could nip a little here…tuck a little there. Who would know that Dublin wasn't as wide as the maker originally planned or why the freehand curved more on one side. The success of making a great piece of wood into a true Billiard is often gut wrenching for the maker and a rare treat for the smoker.This pipe is one of the rare treats. This Gem series Garnet is a beautiful and classic Billiard with a Sterling Silver band. It has excellent straight grain surrounding the bowl and a handcut tapered stem. There is a Garnet in an 18K gold setting on the stem. There's nomenclature on the two sides and bottom of the shank. A special pipe and rare for reasons explained above. This special pipe will arrive in a Gem Series presentation box which is in part the cause of the shipping being a bit higher than usual.
