Description: Robert Frank Jack Kerouac New Sealed Les Americains Delpire ISBN 9791095821199 The Americans Revised 60th Anniversary Edition France. Delpire. 2018. Hardcover. With the dust jacket. 60th Anniversary edition. Text in French. Wonderful b/w photographs of American life across the country. Robert Frank captures the culture and environment of rural and urban America. Introduced by Jack Kerouac. New and sealed. This landmark collection from Robert Frank inspired artists from Nan Golden to Lee Friedlander. Robert Frank's plaintive black and white images captured the stark sense of aimlessness that undercut the seemingly upward boom of the 1950’s. "That crazy feeling in America, when the sun is hot on the streets and the music comes out of the jukebox or from a nearby funeral," Jack Kerouac wrote in the introduction. Life was not the same idyllic suburban dream for everyone. Times were hard and people were afraid; the cold war was reaching its peak level, the civil rights movement was just beginning, and many had not recovered from the hardships of World War II. Robert Frank sensed this and set out across the country, searching for the images that would tell the truth to a culture who seemed to have convinced themselves that the hardest part was behind them. Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE In 1955, Robert Frank traveled across the USA. A cowboy, a tattooed man napping in a park, the suffering of a woman at the funeral of someone dear to her, a shoeshine man, a highway, women clinking glasses… In 1958, just 84 of his images were published, to general indifference. Over time, the book became a classic. Mocked as sad, perverse or even subversive by the American press at the time, the book’s importance has grown over the years. Photographers, critics and the general public came to hail Robert Frank’s work as truly innovative. In 1958, it was in France that the mythical book The Americans appeared for the first time. Sixty years later, in 2018, Delpire editions published a new version of the monument of photographic modernity. Robert Delpire, friend of Robert Frank, had promised to publish his images before he even set out on his journey to the heart of America. The Parisian publisher designs the book with a drawing by Saul Steinberg on the cover. In 1959, The Americans was published in the United States by Grove Press, with a preface by Jack Kerouac which infused the work with a Beat dimension. Robert Frank "takes rank among the tragic poets of this world" writes Kerouac. The publisher sells 600. Since then hundreds of thousands of books have been sold. Over the years, different versions of The Americans tended to look alike. But Delpire editions always kept hold of the French edition. In 1985, they published a new version with a photo on the cover. Jack Kerouac's text is translated by Michel Deguy. For the fiftieth anniversary, in 2008, the German publisher Gerhard Steidl worked closely with Robert Frank in Gottingen on a new version, closer to the original American edition. Steidl even planned a French edition of this version which never goes to market. It is with the new translation of Brice Matthieussent, planned by Steidl in 2008 and recovered by Delpire since, that the edition of the sixtieth anniversary appeared with captions opposite the images and no longer grouped at the end. This is the very last edition as Robert Frank gave his negatives to the National Gallery with a very precise and binding contract. Frank stated he wanted to cut short any "extension" of his work after his death. He selected the images that make up the Americans in the 1950s; he pulled them; It's finished. He believed it is essential that the public sees what the photographer has chosen himself. New hardcover in dust jacket. Still in shrink wrap. The book is new and unread.
