Product Description: This offering is for a new-old-stock Modolo Flash road bike stem in a size 110 mm. The overall styling is fairly nice...from the cone-style expander nut to the wrap-around design of the stem clamp (with the pinch bolt tucked-in underneath the stem...refer to pictures). I would probably still classify them as more of a sport/fitness offering, as Modolo made better quill stems during this era. If there is a downside, it's the finish that knocks these stems down a few notches...as the finish is a dull gray without any polishing/finishing work. With respect to compatibility, the quill diameter is the relatively common 22.2 mm, which should fit any 1" or 25.4 mm steerer tube, and the clamp size measures in the 25.8 mm to 26.0 mm range (again, a relatively common size). I should also mention that while they are made from an aluminum alloy, these stems will never be considered lightweight, as this model/size weighs 349 grams (according to our digital postal scale). We have also received some questions regarding the durability of these Modolo stems, especially since there was a recall notice issued in the late 80's for selected Modolo stems. More specifically, there was a brief window of time (from 1987 through July 1988) where selected Modolo stems were deemed to have design/manufacturing flaws that may cause the stem to crack/break around the area of the binder bolt. We have since learned after reviewing this recall notice that while this model stem was among the handful of models included in the notice, the design and manufacturing of this stem offering reflects post recall corrections. In other words, this stem does not have the design/manufacturing flaws identified in the recall notice, so this particular stem was manufactured after the date window in question and reflects Modolo's corrected design. So in summary, these stems for sale are fine and not subject to the same clamp fatigue/failure concerns as their predecessors. Having said all of this, and for those that are interested, I have copied some excerpts from the actual recall notice that highlight the primary design problem and the changes Modolo implemented to correct the problem. Even though the stems we are offering herein do not have any such problems, I thought the information might still be helpful for those that currently have other Modolo quill stems and want to check them for potential problems. Please look for this additional information below. As for condition, they are new and unused, with cosmetic scratches/scuffs from shopwear (as they were all bulk packed in thin plastic bags). Recall Notice Excerpt... Modolo stems manufactured between 1987 and July 1988 may crack where the binder bolt goes through the stem body. So if you continue to ride a bicycle with one of these stems, the stem may break around this clamp area. Modolo model stems with this defect during the aforementioned date window include the Master SSC, Professional, Equipe, Team SLK, Speedy and Flash. If you are not sure about the model stem you own, then the following description should help determine if your stem has the design flaw. The defective stems have a noticeable (raised) ridge that runs along the bottom-side of the stem body. At the point where the binder bolt enters the stem body, the width of the stem is 5/8" (or 16 mm) along this ridge. The width of the entire stem body at this point is 15/16" (or 24 mm). On the Modolo stems that have been redesigned to deal with this flaw, there is more alloy material used and no ridge is present along the bottom side of the stem body. To help quantify the presence of extra material used on these newer/corrected stems, the width of the stem body at the binder bolt is wider at 1" (and again, with no ridge present on the bottom-side of the stem body on these newer stems). Note to international customers regarding shipping... We apologize to those that feel some of our international shipping charges are too high. We only charge actual shipping rates, but once an order exceeds a certain amount, we hesitate to use the least expensive US Postal Services First Class International service. We feel this way, because this service is not trackable or insurable...so more risk of loss. We prefer the US Postal Services Priority Mail International service for more expensive orders, because this service is trackable at USPS.com and insurable...so less risk of loss. Unfortunately, this service is more expensive, especially for smaller/lighter packages, relative to the First Class International service. We are sorry about these higher shipping costs, but hopefully our notes help to explain why this is the case. Note to international customers regarding customs... We also apologize to those that feel their country import taxes, duties and brokerage fees are excessive. As a small US business, we are required by customs' laws to declare each order as a retail sale. Additionally, the declared order value must be equal to total store purchases and/or winning auction bids (less any shipping costs, as these are not considered in the declared value). As a result, each customer will be responsible for paying his/her own country taxes, duties and brokerage fees, which will be collected upon delivery. Again, we apologize for these additional costs, but we cannot afford the penalties and fines that come with breaking customs' laws...so we have to strictly abide by them.
