There are great deals on Nest Protect auctions, but there are also many units being sold that are worthless, potentially dangerousor are just a very bad deal. This spreadsheet provides all the information you need to evaluate a Nest Protect unit offeredat auction, Amazon resellers, Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. Nest Protect CO/Smoke detectors have a 10 year lifespan beginning the day that they are manufactured, regardless of the day theyare opened. This lifespan is determined by the half-life of radioactive particles (Americium-241) that detect smoke. Once theexpiration date is reached, the unit will beep twice every minute indicating that it needs to be replaced. A Nest Protect that is 10years old is worthless as well as annoying.All Nest Protects have their manufacture and expiration date printed on the back of the unit. A seller who has an open box unitshould state the expiration date in their listing and show the date in photos. If they do not give the expiration date they arewithholding important information. Nest Protects that are still sealed do not have the expiration date visible, but the manufacturedate can be decoded from the serial number.
