Description: From a Casas Adobes estate in Tucson some twenty years ago is this overtly appealing I believe 1930's or perhaps earlier 1940's Navajo ingot silver ring with a strikingly attractive Arizona petrified wood set. The 200 million year old fossilized centerpiece is of wonderful coloration and clearly shows the grain and pore structure of the original wood. Set in a plain bezel and framed by scallops of half round silver wire, it obviously has nothing to do with the red agatized Petrified Forest material commonly seen - and I'm sure was not chosen simply by chance. The front plate and shank are also proper rolled ingot, meaning this ornament was not plucked from a Fred Harvey ring tray at some easily accessed touristic roadside rest stop. More likely a period visitor discovered it at a real trading post a bit further out in the hinterlands. Whatever the story, it superbly represents the elevated aesthetic of a tribal craftsman working by traditional hand accomplished means while Franklin Roosevelt occupied the White House. Weight is good for the form at about 6.9 grams on my portable digital scale. Condition is quite fine with an aura of time to the silver surfaces. Be aware I have avoided every urge to refresh away or "improve" upon any natural toning - you want that done you do it. The petrified wood is well preserved, still exhibiting good evidence of its local lapidary origins. All signs of previous service simply validate the eight decade history. A look at the pics should give a good idea of appearance and condition. Size is at least 7 and possibly 7 1/4 on my jeweler's ring mandrel (the bottom edge of the shank reaches the "7" line on the mandrel, with some room showing at the sides). About 1 7/32 in. vertical and 7/8 in. horizontal at the front. That lovely oval cab is about 23x15mm - and yes, it will be noticed. If you prefer historic southwestern adornment for "the look" and road less traveled, or simply wish a single immediate improvement to the ambiance of each day, this will have great meaning for you.. inkfrog terapeak
