Minnesota was the 32nd state to be admitted to the Union, on May 11, 1858. The design features an outlined image of the state of Minnesota, superimposed with the state's motto Land of 10,000 Lakes. In the background of the coin, you'll see a shoreline of Norway Pines, a pair of hunters in a fishing boat, and a loon in the foreground on the lake's surface. How was this cut coin made? This quarter has been hand-cut-out with a tiny saw blade -- not cut by a machine or laser. First several holes were drilled thorough the coin surface, then a coin cutter with decades of coin cutting experience used a jeweler's blade to "cut away" the background, leaving the remaining design as you see. The cut coin design remaining is that part of the coin "uncut." The original coin came from the same coins you see every day, but those areas your see in the photo that are darker have been removed -- cut away -- creating a pendant for use a jewelry.
