JC Leyendecker (1874-1951) was an entrepreneur and considered by Norman Rockwell and other contemporaries as one of if not the greatest illustration master of the 20th century! Classically trained at the Chicago Art Institute, and the Colarossi and Académie Julian in Paris, Leyendecker was a gifted draughtsman and technician who eschewed the use of photography in favor of direct drawing from life. His secret painting medium, a mix of oils and turpentine, produced the rich, fluid brush strokes and luminous painting surfaces that are the hallmarks of his work. He painted strong and sleek athletic men beautiful and sleek women. Leyendecker painted more Saturday Evening Post covers than anyone else (322 to Rockwell?s 321) and also painted for American Weekly, Collier's, Popular Magazine, Century Illustrated, Ladies' Home Journal and advertisements for Kuppenheimer, Interwoven socks, Chesterfield (utilizing the same fade-away technique as friend, Coles Phillips), Kellogg's, Ivory, Pierce Arrow, and created the Arrow Collar Man.
