Description: Here we have a mind-blowing slice of New York art-funk from the minds and fingers of bassist Bill Laswell and synth/sound manipulator Michael Beinhorn, known collectively as MATERIAL: Memory Serves, their sizzling 1982 debut, issued in this expanded CD edition ten years later, now long unavailable. Over four decades after the fact, it’s almost startling to realize just how far ahead of their time this band truly was. Utilizing a constantly shifting pool of top-notch musicians, Material merged rock, funk, jazz and avant-garde into a heady fusion groove capable of freeing the mind and the ass simultaneously. For this album, Laswell and Beinhorn aligned themselves with a rotating ensemble of some of the best talent NYC had to offer, circa 1982: Sonny Sharrock (guitar), Fred Frith (guitar, violin, xylophone), Henry Threadgill (alto sax), George Lewis (trombone), Henry Kaiser (guitar), Olu Dara (cornet), Billy Bang (violin), Anton Fier (drums), Robert Musso (guitar), Daniel Ponce (percussion), Charles K. Noyes (percussion), and Grandmaster D.S.T. (turntables), among others. The result is a stunning funk attack flavored with experimental touches that make their grooves crackle and buzz with dark intensity. As the Trouser Press Guide puts it: “The procession of textures is dazzling, the funk cuts like a knife and the horn work is disciplined within tight structures… Memory Serves is a highly original crossover.” Laswell kept the Material imprint going for about fifteen years since this album’s release… but for our money, he has never bettered it. And the CD edition adds a bonus track: Material's killer cover of Ennio Morricone’s theme from For a Few Dollars More. This disc shows very slight wear, but looks fine and plays flawlessly.
