Description: CHARMING ANTIQUE PORTRAIT OF A PEKINGESE DOGLate Victorian or Edwardian. From around the turn of the 19th century. A beautifully painted antique dog watercolour portrait of a pekingese!With this is a rare opportunity to buy a nice one, by such an obviously good hand, when Pekingese are particularly desirable dog subjects, and when good antique ones are very, VERY thin on the ground! It is quite a distinctive hand too, so someone more specifically conversant with dog painters than I am might recognise it. Visible image measuring 6 7/8 x 10 1/8 ins (17.5 x 25.8 cm) Including the nice antique frame with original antique plate glass 12 1/4 x 15 1/2 ins (39.3 x 31.2 cm) There's no signature, but I was loath to disturb the back that is all nicely intact with nice early pins, so the painting is unexamined out of the frame. And there is therefore always the possibility that there might be something helpful hiding inside on the back. The frame is very sweet, a quality contemporaneous c1900 moulding, still with its original gilt finish. And it still boasts having the original lovely slightly wobbly antique plate glass of that period, which enhances everything and is always nice to see having survived. The corners are a trifle battered, but nothing significant barring a big chip to the lower right corner. The pins behind are all lovely and old too, testifying to its being all nicely intact, which is why I haven't checked inside for any info hiding there. And the condition of the watercolour itself is remarkably good for its age too. It's not visibly faded at all, and there's no sign of foxing or browning or anything untoward. I actually think it's either barely ever been hung, or if it has been, it's been properly kept out of ALL direct natural light as all watercolours should be. That's not just sunlight watercolours need to be kept out of, as some like to think to convenience, but ALL direct natural light! And having survived so well, that has to be continued.
