Design and Composition •The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Abraham Lincoln by Victor David Brenner. •The original reverse, also designed by Brenner, shows the value surrounded by wheat stalks, hence the name "Wheat Penny". •The 1946 Lincoln Wheat Penny is made from a metallic composition deriving from expired ammunition shell casings used during World War II2. These so-called “shell case pennies” are 95 percent copper and 5 percent zinc. Mintage and Value •The 1946 Lincoln Wheat Penny was minted at three U.S. Mint locations: Philadelphia (no mint mark), Denver (D), and San Francisco (S). •The mintage figures were quite high in 1946, with more than one billion Pennies struck across all three U.S. Mint locations. •The melt value of a 1946 Lincoln wheat cent is $0.0271 and the weight is 3.11 grams The initials of Victor David Brenner, “VDB”, are located on the obverse (front) of the 1946 Lincoln Wheat Penny. They appear under Lincoln’s shoulders and the lettering is quite small. Originally, the initials were placed on the reverse (back) of the coin, at the bottom between the two wheat ears. However, some early recipients of the Lincoln Cent took exception with the prominence of Brenner’s “VDB” initials in this location. As a result, the mint allowed the initials to be included back on the coin in a less conspicuous location. So, if you’re looking for Brenner’s initials on a 1946 Wheat Penny, you’ll find them on the front, under Lincoln’s shoulders.
