Description: Meticulously hand-carved from wood, this African Yoruba Gelede helmet mask is a modern take (estimated 10-50 years old) on traditional Gelede masks. The Gelede helmet mask, originating from the Yoruba culture of Nigeria, is a ceremonial artifact traditionally used in the Gelede festival. This ritual honors the power of elderly women, especially revered as protectors of fertility and community well-being, while also holding influence over aspects like barrenness and mortality. The festival, typically held between March and May, aligns with the rainy season and new agricultural beginnings. During Gelede, dancers wear masks featuring intricate and varied designs that celebrate "the mothers," encompassing elderly women, female ancestors, and female orisha (goddesses), whose influence permeates all social aspects.
