In the early 1970s I assembled a group of young technical tigers who believed, as I did, the art of watchmaking had not significantly improved for 50 year. In the next two years we designed, developed, built and sold the world's first solid state digital electronic watch called PULSAR. Most advances in technology begin with the simple idea that improvement is both desirable and possible. Don't that which exists for granted. Best regards". John M. Bergey, alongside partner Dick Walton, transferred from the military product division at the Hamilton Watch Company to head up research and development at the firm's watch division. They had been working on an electronically time fuse and the company wanted to explore the possibility of applying their work to a commercial product, the quartz watch. After collaborating with Electro-Data, Inc., who had been working to develop a digital quartz watch with a light-emitting diode display, their joint-enterprise introduced the world's first electronic digital watch, the Pulsar, which was introduced on the market in 1972. Bergey was named the president of Time Computer Inc., which was created to develop and market the Pulsar; he holds twenty-six patents wither alone or jointly for virtually every aspect of the watch.
