JELLY ROLL MORTON RED HOT PEPPERS 78 RPM: BLACK BOTTOM STOMP - VICTOR 20221 - E-

Description: Jelly Roll Morton's Red Hot Peppers 78 rpm on Victor Ferdinand Joseph LaMothe (né Lemott,[2] later Morton; c. September 20, 1890 – July 10, 1941), known professionally as Jelly Roll Morton, was an American ragtime and jazz pianist, bandleader, and composer of Louisiana Creole descent.[3] Morton was jazz's first arranger, proving that a genre rooted in improvisation could retain its essential characteristics when notated.[4] His composition "Jelly Roll Blues", published in 1915, was one of the first published jazz compositions. He also claimed to have invented the genre.[5]Morton also wrote "King Porter Stomp", "Wolverine Blues", "Black Bottom Stomp", and "I Thought I Heard Buddy Bolden Say", the last being a tribute to New Orleans musicians from the turn of the 20th century.Morton's claim to have invented jazz in 1902 was criticized.[3] Music critic Scott Yanow wrote, "Jelly Roll Morton did himself a lot of harm posthumously by exaggerating his worth ... Morton's accomplishments as an early innovator are so vast that he did not really need to stretch the truth."[3] Gunther Schuller says of Morton's "hyperbolic assertions" that there is "no proof to the contrary" and that Morton's "considerable accomplishments in themselves provide reasonable substantiation.”"Black Bottom Stomp" is a jazz composition. It was composed by Jelly Roll Morton in 1925 and was originally entitled "Queen of Spades". It was recorded in Chicago by Morton and His Red Hot Peppers, for Victor Records on September 15, 1926.The performers on the original recording were:Clarinet: Omer SimeonTrumpet: George MitchellTrombone: Kid OryPiano: Jelly Roll MortonBanjo: Johnny St. CyrDouble Bass: John LindsayDrums: Andrew Hilaire Courtesy: WikipediaHere's What You'll Get: Black Bottom Stomp/The Chant Victor 20221 1926 VG+ (E- VJM grade) Watch for Future Rare 78 Listings! GRADING: primarily grade my records visually, based on the Goldsmith rating system of Mint, Near Mint, Very Good Plus, Very Good, Good, and Poor. Questionable marks and scratches are usually tested on a turntable and noted in the listing. I try to err on the conservative side in my grading; but since it is not an exact science, there are bound to be differing opinions as to what constitutes a certain grade. Suffice it to say that I strive to be as honest as possible in my listings, as I plan on selling records, etc. for the long haul and I am not interested in ripping anyone off. That being said, I would add that the time for questions is DURING the auction, not after. I will be happy to respond to any email as soon as possible.
